editing blog

Due to my absence the previous class, my editing time was cut short because I had to take 30 minutes out of the class period time to film the scenes that I missed. When I finally arrived into the classroom, I was greeted with the somber knowledge that Pinnacle Studios was not able to be opened into the school computer . This brought me major frustration because I was prepared and even excited to edit my raw footage into a commercial. Because things did not go as planned, I had to write a filming blog instead if editing the footage.

Writing this paragraph is also frustrating because it is difficult to find things to write about because I did not edit and this is supposed to be a blog about editing. This dilemma caused me to contemplate the topic and contents of each paragraph. We only managed to dump the raw footage into one of my group mate's google drive. There, we will have to wait until next class in order to start editing .

For next class, I will feel more comfortable writing my blog because I will have edited the footage into a commercial. Because of this, I will be able to right a proper paragraphed blog. Next class will also be easier because the footage was already filmed and I will have the whole class period dedicated to editing the footage.

Filming blog

The filming process was hectic for me individually. This is because I was not present the first day of filming because I was taking the aice history and the aice psychology paper 2 exams. This was especially difficult because I was in a majority of the scenes. Because of me not being there, my teammates only got to film a couple of scenes. I was not able to complete the filming blog the day it was due due to the fact that I did not film my commercial so I did not know what to blog about. I knew when I came to school the second day of filming I had to be on my A-game. When I was leaving my house I just remembered hat I had to bring my vans so I quickly went back inside and Changed into vans. I also brought a second backpack to hold my other shoes. My other shoes had to old and worn out. This is because I was trying to make the worn out shoes represent any brand opposing vans.

When I got to school, I signed out a camera and went outside to start filming. One of my teammates had to change because she had to wear the same outfit she did the previous week. We had a couple of setbacks. One setback was that one of my group mates did not have the outfit they wore the previous week. One major setback was that one of our characters who filmed with my group mates the previous week did not show up to school. This caused my group mates and I to improvise. We had to stray away from the script, which was expected.

Another setback we had was the audio. There was someone who was mowing the lawn which caused the camera to not hear me speak in my scene

Storyboard blog

The storyboard below starts off with a wide shot of a boy who is walking and then falls down the stairs. Then, there is a shot of the boy declaring "I can't do anything in these!" with a tilt occurring from his gloomy face to his worn out shoes. All of a sudden, there will be someone running past the boy, which attracts his attention. During that, there will be a voiceover saying "Run" and background music. Next will be someone skating (Voiceover:Skate), and the skater meets up with the model in the Vans outfit (Voiceover: Be yourself in Vans over the background music). All three people representing Vans will meet up and face the boy. They all snap their fingers and a jump cut occurs from his worn out shoes appears to Vans shoes. Finally, he exclaims "Vans Off The Wall!".

Editing Lesson Blog

On today, October 14th 2019, I learned about the process of editing footage. The lesson taught to me today in media studies was very interesting and informative. I learned the definitions of key terms such as import and export and how to perform these functions. I learned that after filming, we need to open an application named Pinnacle Studios which is an editing software. The first step was to put the SD card in the SD card reader, then the USB port. There, I would need to create a folder on the desktop. All footage in the folder is dated and the document on the bottom is most likely the most recent footage.

The first vocabulary word I learned was dumping. Dumping is when footage is moved from a camera onto a computer. Then, I learned that importing is when footage is placed from the desktop to another source such as the Pinnacle Studios editing software. Furthermore, exporting is when footage is moved from the software back onto the desktop. I also learned that it is best to import all of the footage onto the editing software. When footage is first imported into the editing software it is referred to as raw footage. This is because the footage has not been modified.

When editing, there are certain icons to look for. One example of this is the razor blade icon in the Pinnacle Studios application which splits the chosen footage in half. Another icon to look for is the "T" icon which does the job of adding text onto the footage. A good use of this icon is when establishing the title of the film you are attempting to create. An additional icon is the music icon which allows users to import music, or MP3 into their film. Alongside icons, there are various techniques that help make the editing process elementary. For example, the transition function can be performed by right-clicking on a selected take, opening effects editor, and clicking whichever transition you deem necessary. A second technique is the addition of a voice-over. In order to successfully complete this task, you must detach the sound of the footage from the footage itself. Then, delete the detached sound and then add the desired audio.

Planning Blog for Vans commercial

For our Vans commercial we will be filming at the school's bus loop area. We will have a person walking and falling down the stairs, declaring "I can't do anything in these!"(a tilt shot occurs from his gloomy face to his worn out shoes). Then, the boy looks over and sees three people: someone who is running, someone who is skating, and someone who is walking(dressing in a Vans outfit). A voice over occurs for every person. (" Run, skate, and be yourself in Vans" respectively). After this, they will all meet up at a general area and there is a fade out from the scene to the vans logo.
  • Props: Vans skateboard.
  • Costumes: Van shoes, Vans socks, Vans shirt, Vans pants, and Vans beanie.
  • Schedule:
- Day 1: Planning our Vans commercial.
- Day 2: Script and story boarding.
- Day 3: Filming.
- Day 4: Editing.
- Day 5: Submitting commercial.
- Day 6: Reflecting on commercial.

  • Location List: We will be filming at the school's bus loop area.
  • Back-up Plan: We will be filming at the school's car loop or student parking lot. It will be the same plan where a person walks and trips, declaring, "I can't do anything in these!"(pointing at his worn out shoes). Then, the boy looks over and sees three people: someone who is running, someone who is skating, and someone who is walking(stylish in a Vans outfit). A voice over occurs for every person. (" Run, skate, and be yourself in Vans" respectively). After this, they will all meet up at a general area and the scene fades out.

Vans Commercial Conventions

Codes and conventions are used by many different companies as a marketing strategy in order to grab the attention of consumers and make their product seem more interesting. A code is a system of signs that are put together to create a meaning. An example of a code is a technical code which are camera techniques, framing, lighting, exposure etc. Another example of a code is a symbolic code which is a code that consists of objects, setting, body language, clothing, and color. Lastly, there are written codes which are headlines, captions, speech bubbles, and language styles.  Conventions are habits of doing things. In short, what people have come to expect. Examples of conventions are: Camera angle and shots, editing, lighting, sound, music, computer graphics, and special effects.

Vans uses codes and conventions in their commercials to make their shoes appear more appealing and pop out more to audiences. One example of this is one of their commercials that use a boy skateboarding at a skate park with vans on. In this commercial, different conventions. For example, in the commercial the boy is skateboarding and the shot changes to a wide angle shot of the boy skating. Another convention that was used in this commercial is when their is a tracking shot that tracked the boy skating to give the audience a better understanding to the boy's point of view. This use of convention make audiences see the shoes as more appealing and "cool"

We chose Vans because we have an interest in this brand of shoe. Now-a-days this type of shoe is very popular and has caught the eyes of others in the skateboard industry. We all love skateboarding and vans provide the perfect shoes to ride and do tricks. The company sponsors surf, snowboarding, BMX, and motocross teams. The company also has a Vans Warped Tour traveling rock festival that we all enjoy to watch.

Introductory

Good afternoon. This is my first post so I need it to be interesting. For starters, my name is Lesly and I am in the 11th grade. I am 6'3(I know, I know) and skinny. My family is fairly small with random family members who I swear i have never met before showing up to family reunions saying things like, "It's been forever Lesly". I am a very nice person who is approachable. I am good at listening and according to other people, I give good advice.

My favorite color is blue because it is very majestic and calm. My favorite food is pizza from Little Caesars. My favorite flavor of ice cream is vanilla because it is simple yet still tastes good. I enjoy watching anime and reading manga because of the multiple beautiful plots and the amazing art and animation styles. Anime such as Dragon Ball, Naruto, and My Hero Academia are prime examples of anime that i would watch till the end of time. I have a PlayStation 4 and I enjoy playing online with my friends. I love interacting with new people because i can learn about their different backgrounds and interesting lives.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone bullies another person. Don't get me wrong, I like occasionally cracking jokes with my friends but I dislike it when someone else makes fun of someone to the point where it puts the victim in a bad mood. Another thing i dislike is pickles. Pickles are nasty and taste very bitter. The only way I can eat pickles is when they are in a burger or sandwich. Another thing i dislike is Korean music or as some like to call it-K-Pop. Lastly, another thing I dislike is someone getting hurt. When someone gets hurt, it makes me cringe with disgust.

Thank you for reading my first post.
Sincerely, Lesly
